Back Deck

Another back-dated post to cover a large project we did in the fall. In September we started the new back deck project. This involved removing the old deck, digging post holes for concrete supports, clearing out all the old gardens and somewhat leveling the back yard by the house.

The project continued with a beautiful retaining wall and stone stairs down to my garden which I’ll include. The deck isn’t 100% done – we plan to do more planters (on each corner) and stairs as well as one section should get a roof. We LOVE having this deck that spans the house and we can officially use all the sliding doors now!

It has begun … this was October 24
While we were leveling things – we tore out the old bushes and planted a new perennial garden in the front
October 31 – Deck is coming along
Rotten sill plate – a bit more work than planned
November 6 – Joists are done!
N
November 20 – trex is going in
November 21 – good weekend progress
December 4 – luckily the small amount of snow keeps clearing and progress keeps continuing on weekends
December 5 – almost done!
December 13 – down to the last row!

Our new doors came in (sliding doors) in January and Ryan decided it would be a good weekend to install them… on January 30. It was COLD and we only got one done that weekend but the new doors look great.

January 30 – getting ready…
There was a series of unfortunate events including installing the wrong door and having to remove it (we caught it at the first nail at least).
January 30 – 8pm – it’s in
February 13 – both doors are in!
Quite a bit warmer now
New tyvek up on the section of siding we have to re-install
March 26 – new stairs going in down to the garden
Another view of the stairs and the wall … thank you Mark
The wall wraps around and goes the whole length of the deck
April 11 – almost done
The canopy on the deck that lasted 3 days before blowing away… but the wall looks great. Just a few caps to go
Ma 1 – the wall/stairs are all done. New garden on the side and the kids favorite spot to play outside right now

That’s a long post but it covers a very long project and our main focus over the fall/winter/spring. Hopefully I’ll get a garden update going soon as 2022 Garden is in full swing!
