Some painting

Ryan had to work late tonight so after I got home and had some dinner I decided to do some painting.  First I sanded the crown molding and baseboards lightly.  After cleaning that up I put the second (and final) coat on the crown molding and then the first coat on the baseboards.

Once i cleaned up the paint brush from that, I pulled out the bathroom paint and did a coat on the spots we had touched up.  They probably need a second coat still, we’ll see how it looks once it dries.

Tomorrow night is stitch night!  Twice in one month, definitely a record since I moved to NH :)

Crown Molding – it’s up!

First – for future reference -be careful when buying moldings at home depot, these were marked at 53/37 angles however that’s not a standard spring angle (37) for crown molding, so we decided to actually measure the angle using some of the nifty tools Ryan got for xmas.  Right on the dot it was 38 degrees spring.  Which is standard, so that’s what we used.

We also decided to start on a different side this time around, leaving the crazy bowed ceiling side for 3rd instead of second, and helping to hide our last coped corner behind the door in case it didn’t come out great.  And without further ado – here are the pictures to show our work for the day…

Just a quick note about the piece above the window … this is where our ceiling bows down and also where our wall bows a bit.  So to accommodate these curves we had to scribe and cut the molding along the ceiling.  Finally in the left corner we had to just leave a gap (we could only bend it so much) and decided to spackle the ceiling down to match the molding in that one corner.  We were actually quite happy with this piece when done but it was a lot of work.

After getting some cakes in the oven while ryan went around and added some nails and set them all to tighten it all up, I went around and filled all the nail holes and did some spackling (couple of dings in the walls to get too).

Since the spackle was out (for the ceiling corner and dings) we decided to touch up the bathroom a bit too.  We got a crack next to the door so we put in a piece of wood behind the drywall and screwed along the seam.  Then I spackled it to start the process of covering it up.  Probably need 2 more coats on this seam.

Now I’m off to work on my valentine’s cake project… if it’s successful i’ll post pics tomorrow.

Back from stitching for a surprise

While I was gone tonight Ryan was very busy! We now have a door knob on both sides of the bathroom door! This was no easy feat – a larger lockset needed to be installed which meant mortising out a spot for that larger lockset.

It’s not completed – we need to patch up the old holes and repaint but the door knob works! And there’s room to grab it on the outside!

This was a huge surprise and with a few touchups to paint the bathroom will soon be crossed off the list completely!

And tomorrow it’s back to the porch!

A weekend home

We didn’t do much around the house this weekend, it was too hot and humid and we had a picnic to go to on Saturday.

Sunday we did manage a few small projects, first we hung the bathroom door!

Finally a bathroom door hung.


It still needs some touch ups (had to plane off one corner – which is very familiar since we had to do the same for our exterior door). And we have to put in a door lockset or a tiny handle on the current lockset. But the door functions which is a huge improvement!

After we relaxed during the hottest part of the day we decided to do some paint stripping on the trim for the tvroom. A lot of it had been stripped but the 4 pieces for the window sides need to be done still so Ryan got out the heat gun and I got out the strippers and we got to work. Until I cut my finger – then we called it a day.

A couple more hours and we’ll have the trim for the windows all done. The trim for the exterior door is done already but can’t go in until we have a closet door frame and trim installed.

First coat of paint on the trim

After work last night I broke out the paint again :)   I got the second side of the door primed and then I put the first coat of paint on the window trim!  Of course painting at night comes with lots of little tiny bugs that can fit through the screen so there were some casualties and there will need to be some sanding before the second coat now :)

Bathroom mirror

Finally the bathroom mirror is up! Last night as a last minute project Ryan hung the mirror.  The bathroom is just waiting for it’s door and some touch up painting now!

Well the weather out-smarted us!

We had NO rain today – despite forecasts yesterday for rain all morning and thunderstorms in afternoon.  All well – can’t complain about good weather however we had changed our weekend plans (my parents did not come out) because we expected rain.

So we continued to pretend it was raining and did indoor projects :)   First we did some shopping and ordered our new front door which will take a few weeks to come (and then I’ll have to finish it to match the other door).

Then we finally added the little bit we needed to the bottom of the bathroom door so it doesn’t have a big gap at the bottom.

And after much wood filling and sanding during the day (and more sanding, and more sanding), I finally ended the day with some priming!  I got the window trim in the gym all primed and side one of the bathroom door!

And this week I’m hoping to continue priming/painting the windows in the gym and the bathroom door.  Soon the bathroom will really be done!
